Our state is home to at least eight different types of oak trees, with the most common being white oak, bur oak and black oak. Wisconsinites have long held respect for oak trees, even naming trails after them like the Oak Leaf Trail that runs through Milwaukee.
While it is uncommon to remove healthy oaks, they can become a safety hazard when they rot or are damaged. Trunk damage, splits in the wood, hollow trees and large dead branches can all be a sign that your oak tree is dead or diseased and should be removed. The leaves of dying oak trees will usually yellow and eventually fall off. Mushrooms or fungal growth near the base is typically a dead giveaway that the tree has suffered irreversible root decay.
